When one speaks of Topolsica, one has in mind the Toplice Valley, which is the core of the town bearing the same name. However, the spa complex near the Vesna Hotel and the hospital is not in the centre of the town; the centre is located slightly lower – near the fire station and the four-class primary school.
With its natural resources and well-developed spa tourism, Topolsica has written a story in green and blue – a story that must be read in its place of origin – in Topolsica!
The green window of Topolsica is laced with stunning views of the hilltops rising to steeper slopes where coniferous and mixed forests intertwine softly, without any rivalry. Those tall broad-leaved trees with catkin-like blossoms and seeds in long, hairy bunches – the poplars – that were once abundant, and even gave the name to the town, have today almost disappeared. From the late Middle Ages to World War I, the forest was thinned substantially by the locals to obtain new land for cultivation. Many of (the most ancient) Slovenian settlements and hamlets were named after forests; in the valley of Saleska dolina, such names are Hrastovec, Brezova, Laze, Lazisce, etc., in addition to Topolsica.
The plain at the bottom of the valley is well sheltered from the northern winds by the Lom Hill, slightly opening out only to the south and southeast. The place enjoys many sunny days and there is no billowing fog to knock you down. You will be seduced by the clear blue sky above the sunlit Lom Hill and the crispness of the air. Word has it that this is the home of fresh mountain air – a mild sub-alpine climate. It was probably the serenity of nature that enticed the natural warm water spring to burst forth from beneath the Lom Hill, right from the depths of the extinct Smrekovec volcano. Without its healing thermal water, Topolsica would have never been so developed and famous. Thus, the therapeutic effects of the spring (along with the sub-alpine climate) have always offered good foundations for the development of spa tourism.
